Project Manager - Sofia

Role description


The Sofia Project’s Senior Project Manager for the High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) [transmission system] is an exciting, key position within the team managing the largest and most technically challenging offshore windfarm project undertaken, to date, by innogy Renewables UK.

The Senior Project Manager (HVDC) is responsible for leading a multi-disciplinary team to manage the delivery of the Sofia Project’s HVDC transmission system in accordance with established Health, Safety and Environment (HSE), quality, schedule and cost targets. The role commences after successful completion of the Contract for Difference (CFD) bidding process, with the tender negotiation followed by the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) for the Construction Phase. After Final Investment Decision (FID)/financial close, the Senior Project Manager (HVDC) shall assume responsibility for managing the work through the Construction Phase of the project, culminating in installation and hand-over to the Operations and Maintenance function.

Throughout, the Senior Project Manager (HVDC) shall demonstrably prioritise HSE performance through design and implementation to eliminate or reduce risks during construction, operation and maintenance. The role shall also drive the identification and implementation of opportunities to innovate, both technically and commercially. A multi-disciplinary team will report to this position made-up of direct reports and resources drawn from a matrix organisation.

The offshore wind industry has limited experience of applying HVDC technology and the Senior Project Manager (HVDC) shall be adept at identifying project delivery risks and actively managing the mitigation of those risks.


Required skills and experience


Project Manager (HVDC) shall have the following Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills

  • Successfully completed university studies in engineering or equivalent numerate/science subject.
  • Track record of preparing and implementing HSE Management Systems and skilled in the use of tools and techniques to drive safe behaviours and manage HSE risks. This should comprise both experience of structured approaches to ‘designing out’ HSE risks and site HSE Management.
  • Significant experience of safely and successfully delivering electrical systems for the offshore wind industry. HVDC experience is desirable.
  • Experience as Project Manager. Accreditation of project management experience and/or project management qualifications from an internationally recognised professional body is desirable.
  • Typically, more than 10 years of relevant work experience and good knowledge of project management standards (e.g. PMBoK). Good knowledge of methods of project planning, organisation and project management.
  • Evidence successfully implementing structured approaches to leading Continuous Improvement and innovation across technical, organisational and commercial/contracting facets of the business.
  • Experience of negotiating and managing contracts for the design, supply and installation of offshore wind turbine electrical transmission systems is desirable.
