Wind Turbine Technician Apprenticeship (x4)


Innogy Renewables UK are offering the opportunity for motivated individuals to begin a career in renewable energy with us. This excellent 3 year apprentice scheme will enable the selected candidates to develop into technicians working on wind turbines.

The first 2 year’s will be class room / workshop based at a bespoke Wind Turbine training facility at Llandrillo College, Rhos-on-Sea in North Wales.


The 3rd year will consist of on-site training at one of our state of the art operational wind farm’s around the UK.




We will provide a comprehensive and well supported learning programme including classroom / workshop-based learning and experience on site working with our technicians.  Completing the Apprenticeship will result in an NVQ level 3 qualification in wind turbine operations and maintenance and a level 3 diploma in wind turbine maintenance.You will have gained foundation knowledge and skills in electrical, mechanical and hydraulic engineering and learnt the application to wind turbines.


Our Wind Turbine Technicians work as part of a small team dedicated to specific offshore wind farms. Successful candidates will learn to carry out all aspects of wind turbine maintenance including scheduled, unscheduled, proactive, and troubleshooting maintenance on wind turbines.


Your hard work will ensure our wind farms continue to deliver renewable energy to households and business. It is a rewarding job that allows you to work on highly advanced machinery in a challenging environment. Once trained you will be working at sea, in all weathers, at height using heavy, complex mechanical and electrical equipment. You will be required to demonstrate a commitment to Health and Safety in all aspects of your work.


Initially the focus will be upon learning and developing engineering knowledge through education and training.  However, in the longer term as Technicians the role will involve:


  • Electro/Mechanical problem solving working in small teams at height in remote locations with user manuals as reference
  • Working with advanced mechanical, hydraulic and electrical equipment in a safe manner
  • Planning in advance what tools, spares and materials are required for each job
  • Fault find and diagnosis of wind turbine main component condition to assist in determining if site repair is possible or whether unit requires exchange
  • Support with the Inspection of blades and writing condition reports




You will be keen to learn and undertake a practical role and standby maybe required.


Knowledge and Skills:


  • 5 GCSE’s at 4/C or above including Science and Maths (or equivalent)


  • Willing to learn and develop


  • Interest in an Engineering Career


  • Able to work a height


  • Aptitude for working at sea from service vessels


  • Team Player 


  • Be committed to a safety-first culture


  • Must be willing to work shifts and away from home location


Apprentices will be expected to study full time for the first 2 years at Llandrillo College Rhos-on-Sea in North Wales. During non-term time you will be expected to attend sites across our fleet of Wind farms around the United Kingdom.
